Despite the US trade ban, Huawei can still freely update older smartphones to Android 9 Pie without losing access to the Play Store and Google’s other services. The Chinese brand is taking advantage of this situation by continuing to roll out its EMUI 9.0 software to a bunch of devices.
As things stand, owners of the Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, and Mate 10 Porsche Design can all benefit from the software in addition to those rocking a Huawei Mate 9, Mate 9 Pro, and Mate 9 Porsche Design. Also covered by the rollout are the Huawei P20, P20 Pro, P10, and P10 Pro alongside the newer Huawei Mate 20 Lite. Lastly, Huawei is rolling out EMUI 9.0 to the premium Mate RS and budget Nova 3 line.
Huawei initially began pushing out its Android 9 Pie-based update to some of these devices in late 2018, but it has now revealed that over 80 million smartphones have downloaded EMUI 9.0. Moreover, it expects this number to grow to around 100 million by the end of this month alone.
Although Huawei is pleased with its progress so far for the current version release, the company isn’t as confident about future updates. As it revealed recently, the situation cause by the US trade ban means that it can no longer guarantee smartphones will receive Android 10 Q. After all, if it does choose to roll out the software, users will lose access to Google’s all-important apps in addition to many others.
