Lots of Moto Mods incoming, here are 12 concepts that may become reality!
Motorola's 2016 flagships — the Moto Z and Moto Z Force — added a new concept to the world of smartphones in the form of easy-to-snap-on modules. Named Moto Mods, these gizmos are quick to attach and quick to come off, their purpose being to add features and expand the battery life on your Moto smartphone.
On launch, we had 4 mods — a JBL SoundBoost stereo speaker, the Insta-Share Projector, a Power Pack battery bank, and the Style Shell. Lenovo knows that if the Moto Mods are to pick up and become a truly alluring feature, it will need to be backed by 3rd party developers, who can add their own creative ideas to the project. The company announced a developer kit for the Mods and even hosted a $1,000,000-prize contest for the coolest Mod concept. It later partnered with Indiegogo to make it easier for developers with good ideas to launch their own funding campaigns.
Thus far, we've seen three new Mods be added to the roster — the
Hasselblad True Zoom, which adds optical zoom to your camera, an Incipio Smart Car Dock, which gives us a lot of options for mounting the phone in the car, and a Mophie Juice Pack external battery. The latter two of these are yet to be released.
Now, it seems Lenovo is confident that it has enough fuel for the Moto Mods concept. Why? Because company execs have boldly stated that Motorola itself will focus on pushing out 12 Mods per year. On the topic, Lenovo's Moto Mods director John Touvannas said:
"Our goal is to get more Mods out this year [2017] than we did last year, no question"
What types of Mods should we expect in the future? Thus far, there are no confirmed concepts, but there are plenty of possibilities that have been discussed. Here's some of them:
