Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold name

We didn't expect any surprises when it comes to the actual name of the device, but Google proved us wrong! The company decided to integrate its foldable into the regular flagship series, and now the Pixel Fold 2 is known as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The device launched alongside the other three models from the Pixel 9 series lineup, the vanilla Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL

This change make a lot of sense. Google has decided to integrate its foldable offering into the regular flagship Pixel lineup. There's another change too, the Pixel XL is back in the form of the Pixel 9 Pro XL. And with these two new models, the flagship portfolio grows to four models. The only model that's now out of sync is the Pixel A-series budget lineup.

The front camera is a 10 MP snapper with phase detection autofocus and there's one more selfie camera inside the main folding screen, which is another 10 MP sensor with autofocus.

The original Pixel Fold launched in two memory configurations: 12/256GB and 12/512GB. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold follows the same storage route, but offers more RAM. The phone comes in two storage variants, the base one starts at 256GB and there's a 512GB option as well. Both storage configurations come with 16GB of RAM to further enhance the on-device AI experience.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold design and colors

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold features a brand-new design, in line with the other devices from the Pixel 9 family. Google redesigned the overall form factor and changed the aspect ratio to make the phone more usable. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is also thinner and lighter than its predecessor. The device measures 155.2 mm x 77.1 mm x 10.5 mm when folded, and 155.2 mm x 150.2 mm x 5.1 mm when unfolded, one of the thinnest foldables on the market. The weight is 257 grams.

The design itself is a departure from the design language Google started with the Pixel 6 series, and it is much more flat and angular. The camera bump has been redesigned as well, and there are two colors available to choose from.

  • Obsidian

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold display

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold features two display, a cover screen, and a bigger, flexible inner display. The cover screen is a 6.3-inch Actua display with 20:9 aspect ratio, resolution of 1080 x 2424 pixels (resulting in around 422 PPI), and 60-120Hz variable refresh rate. The cover screen can output up to 1800 nits (HDR) brightness and up to 2700 nits (peak brightness), and it's covered by Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

The main flexible screen measures 8 inches, and Google calls it Super Actua display. The resolution is 2076 x 2152 pixels (around 373 PPI), and it's an LTPO panel capable of 1-120Hz dynamic refresh rates. The brightness figures are the same as the cover screen, 1800 nits of HDR brightness and 2700 nits of peak brightness.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold battery and charging

  • 4650 mAh
  • 45W wired fast charging
  • Wireless charging

The battery capacity of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is 4650 mAh, spread across two batteries inside the two wings of the body. Google promises 24+ hours of autonomy and up to 72-hour battery life with Extreme Battery Saver.

The wired charging support is 45W with a compatible USB-C charger (you have to get one separately), and Google promises hours of power in just minutes of charging, but no firm numbers yet (check out our review for detailed info and tests). The Pixel 9 Pro Fold supports Qi wireless charging as well.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold features and software

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes with Android 14 out of the box, but it will soon be updated to Android 15. There are a lot of AI features baked inside the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. You can check out this article for every AI trick with the Pixel 9 series. Google is launching the Pixel 9 Pro lineup with Gemini Nano onboard, offering multi-modality, and a subscription-base service called Gemini Live.

This will allow users to seamlessly hold conversation with Gemini Nano and make it run errands for them or help them solve problems. Gemini Live is part of the Gemini Advanced program and with every Pixel 9 Pro device purchased, Google is giving one year of Google One AI, which features Gemini Advanced plus 2TB of storage.

Google is also keeping up the software promise with seven full years of major OS updates for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold hardware and specs

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold sports the next-gen Tensor G4 onboard, as this is also the silicon in each and every Pixel 9 series device. This chipset offers a 17% boost in performance when it comes to apps, and 20% in web browsing (compared to its predecessor, the Tensor G3). The Tensor G4 consists of one Cortex-X4 (3.1 GHz) core, three Cortex-A720 (2.6 GHz), and four Cortex-A520 (1.95 GHz). That's one less medium A720 core compared to the G3.

One of the most important features of the new silicon, however, is the ability to run Gemini Nano on-device with multi-modality, thanks to the upgraded TPU section inside the G4 chipset. This means you will be able to control Gemini Nano not only by text commands, but also using image, audio, and speech input.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, which should be more than enough for even the most demanding tasks, AI and machine learning tasks included. As far as biometrics go, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold features a fingerprint scanner, and also can be unlocked with Face Unlock.
