Motorola skipping Android 5.0.2, going directly to Android 5.1 for first-gen Moto devices
David Schuster, Motorola's Software product manager, announced on his Google+ page today that Motorola has decided to go directly to Android 5.1 for its first-gen Moto devices, skipping Android 5.0.2. Schuster said that Motorola has been simultaneously testing both builds of Android on the first-gen Motorola Moto X, Motorola Moto E and Motorola Moto G LTE.

According to Schuster, Motorola decided that with all of the improvements found with the latest Android build, it would be better for Motorola customers if these handsets were updated directly to Android 5.1 from KitKat. Motorola does have some experience with Android 5.1 running on a Moto device. As we told you yesterday, the update has started going out OTA to the Motorola Moto G Google Play edition, making it the first of the Google Play edition handsets to receive this particular build.

Schuster didn't mention when the Android 5.1 update will be sent out to the Motorola Moto phones involved. Considering that the manufacturer has already been testing the new build, it shouldn't be too long before Motorola starts pushing out Android 5.1 to the first-gen Moto models. Interestingly, back in February Motorola placed the blame for the delay in updating the first-gen Moto X on the older Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU under the hood of the handset.
